Meet Rice of Life Poet Phil Mellor

Meet Phil Mellor, author and poet, and featured on two tracks with the upcoming experimental poetry album Repetition is the Rice of Life.

1. Tell us about you, in two sentences:

A yorkshire man living in the US, who loves long walks and spending time with his family. A poet who would probably be a songwriter if it wasn’t for his distinct lack of musical talent.

2: What was your method for creating the poem, anything you’d like to share on your process?

No real secrets here, the concept resonated with me. I guess that’s why I ended up writing two completely different poems. For each of them I got the first line and then just let them flow from there. I try not to edit myself too much in the first draft, only after I get things down in some form do I go back and chip away at it.

3: What were your thoughts on hearing the outcome?

I love how the finished pieces came out. I don’t really know what I expected, but it was surprising hearing them for the first time. They were wild, bright and brilliant things. The beauty about collaboration like this, is you never know how someone else is going to interpret what you do, and it is exciting hearing someone else’s creativity coming alive like that.

4: What was your connection to SkinGasm before agreeing?

I knew Dex from his work, in both music and art and we’ve been friends on social platforms for a while.

5: What’s your favourite rice based meal?

I do love a good biryani. My wife also makes this amazing mahi-mahi dish with rice and homemade mango salsa.

6: What else are you working on/anything to share…

My latest book of poems, Orbit was released in September 2023, and is available on Amazon. No current projects in the works. Waiting to see where the muse takes me next.
